The BMW Group has commenced trials of vehicles featuring hydrogen fuel cell drivetrains in real-world conditions on European roads. In an announcement made on Wednesday, the company stated that prototypes of the BMW I Hydrogen Next would undergo comprehensive evaluations in terms of reliability, safety, and efficiency.

The BMW Group has initiated testing of vehicles equipped with hydrogen fuel cell drivetrains under regular conditions on European streets The company further stated that this technology could eventually become an appealing alternative to battery-electric powertrains, particularly for customers without convenient access to electrical charging infrastructure or those who frequently travel long distances. It is anticipated that these tests will lead to the development of a small-scale production model in 2022.
According to BMW, the hydrogen tank of the BMW I Hydrogen Next can be filled within a few minutes, providing drivers with a range of several hundred kilometers in various weather conditions. Described by the International Energy Agency as a versatile energy source, hydrogen has a wide range of applications and can be utilized in industries such as transportation and manufacturing.
BMW is among the automotive companies exploring the potential of hydrogen and has previous experience in employing it in vehicles. The Hydrogen 7, for example, utilized an internal combustion engine and could run on either gasoline or liquid hydrogen.
Furthermore, Jaguar Land Rover announced on Tuesday that it is developing a prototype of a hydrogen fuel cell electric car, with testing scheduled to commence later this year. The upcoming vehicle will be built on the latest iteration of the Land Rover Defender and is an integral component of JLR's comprehensive initiatives to reach zero tailpipe emissions by 2036. Testing will focus on areas including fuel consumption and off-road capabilities.
Other manufacturers that have ventured into the hydrogen fuel cell market include Toyota and Honda, while smaller companies like Riversimple are also working on hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Additionally, Volvo Cars recently announced its collaboration with SSAB, a Swedish steel manufacturer, to jointly explore the development of fossil-free, high-quality steel for use in the automotive industry.
