The Prius Rally is a modified car created by three Toyota engineers from Michigan. Their task was to push the limits of the hybrid hatchback and transform it into a formidable dirt-racing machine. Their previous creation was a rally car based on the Corolla iM.
While the modifications to the Prius Rally include some cosmetic changes, the car retains the Prius's air-conditioning system to ensure comfort for the driver and navigator, as well as to keep the 1.3-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery pack cool.
To withstand the rigors of rally racing, the team made alterations to the Rally's suspension. Since the Prius shares the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) with several other vehicles, there are plenty of suspension components that can be easily installed. Additional bump stops were added to prevent the suspension from bottoming out during impacts. The stock anti-roll bars were removed from both ends to allow the suspension to work more independently.
While a Prius AWD-e might seem out of place on a wet and slippery rallycross course, the Rally-tuned hybrid feels right at home. The suspension absorbs and smooths out undulating surfaces, providing surprising stability even when the rear unloads while transitioning from corner to corner. The team decided that the standard 15-inch wheels were sturdy enough for off-road duty and fitted them with medium-compound Cooper Rally tires. By disabling the anti-lock braking and stability control systems using a few fuses, they created a rare opportunity to throw the Prius into corners with a Scandinavian flick. Unfortunately, the handbrake was removed, but the team envisions utilizing regenerative braking from the rear engine for directional changes in the future.
With a firm press on the accelerator and a quick right-left maneuver of the steering wheel, the Prius Rally can slide into an epic drift. The Cooper tires throw up dirt and stones, causing them to pelt the car's exposed sheet metal like a hailstorm in a trailer park. Making a Prius go fast on dirt is akin to driving a Mazda Miata swiftly on a road course: maintaining speed is crucial. The stock powertrain of the Prius Rally is far from inspiring. In a previous test, a stock Prius AWD-e took a leisurely 10.7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour. When loose soil is introduced and slow corner exits are encountered, the performance of the Prius Rally deteriorates, resembling a fatigued creature trapped in quicksand.
Addressing the lack of power is a priority for the team, and the TNGA platform offers potential solutions. The impressive 302-horsepower powertrain from the RAV4 Prime seems like an obvious choice, or alternatively, a larger battery pack with a 53-horsepower rear engine. However, the team needs to determine how the American Rally Association (ARA) will categorize their production. Thus far, the Prius has only competed in one event, being limited to the untimed exhibition course due to hybrid cars being uncharted territory (although hybrid technology will be introduced to WRC in 2022). With BMX star and X Games gold-medalist Jamie Bestwick behind the wheel, the team reports that the car performed reliably, resulting in uneventful pit stops. After each stage, no major repairs were needed, and the car consumed minimal fuel, with only consumables such as tires and brake pads requiring replacement.
The work invested in creating the Prius Rally has transformed an otherwise mundane appliance into a profoundly enjoyable experience. The team looks forward to competing in races and adding more power in the coming months. While additional power is eagerly anticipated, the Rally is not defined solely by what it currently is, but rather by its potential. We eagerly await the evolution of this car.
